I am not really responding to your actual post, as I am not in LA and am not technically qualified to mentor anyone as I am still a student myself, but I just wanted to say...WOW! You have some awesome pics in your gallery at Flickr!

What technical issues are you having trouble with? I advise you to take a trip to a hotel like the Bonneventure and practice shooting in the atrium areas. Go to a website like planetneil.com and see what it has to offer in the way of lowlight on camera flash.

 

Perhaps the best approach is to invest in a flash diffuser like the lightsphere (about $50), practice on family and friends, then find a couple who can't afford much and let them know you'll shoot the wedding for whatever its worth to you to get portfolio images.

 

After you have a portfolio or sample album, double your price, after two or three weddings you'll have the confidence to shoot weddings and know what your time is worth.

 

In short, just do it, don't play second fiddle or you'll take years to develop your own portfolio.
