50mm 1.2L

<p>Oddly enough, the search function doesn't turn up a lot of hits for "50mm f/1.2L" or "50/1.2" or "50/1.2L" but if you were to look through the lens section of the Canon EOS forum for the last few weeks, you'd be able to find the previous discussions of this lens.</p>

<p>And as always, <a href="http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/cameras.html#dumbquestion">shouldn't you ask for opinions of the lens <em>before</em> buying it?</a></p>

I have one. I have shot a couple of slide rolls with it (Provia 400F). As I am living in Oman (no good film processing) I have to wait until I go to my home country (Portugal) on leave to process the film.

From the practical side, it is very easy to shoot with it. I was photographing in the Muscat Festival compound, in dim lighting, and the AF was quick enough to grab the action. The handling on the 1V is pretty good too.

I had one briefly. I sent it back because it produced worse images than the 50 f1.4 I was testing it against.

I was getting similar results to those on this page... (with the same camera but entirely more casual methodology)

Compare the 1.4 crops in the Corner Sharpness and Chromatic Aberration section.

I felt it was not worth the extra money, and weight.

Christian Buil has an examination of this lens at:

http://astrosurf.com/buil/50mm/test.htm

It looks like the thing is slightly better, but probably not $1000 better if you never go beyond f/1.4. If you do go beyond f/1.4 though, it's infinitely better.

He also has tests of other lenses and bodies at http://astrosurf.com/buil/. Would you like to build a spectrometer? Most of it is in French, but the usual translation tools can be brought to bear if necessary.

Stephen, I need better than 800x600 resized image with no detail at the edges to judge anything. Your lens may be amazing or it may be rubbish, but there is no way you can tell from the image you've posted. Really, you need 100% crops, preferably with a FF camera of something with some detail and flat.

Ci P. I have absolutely no interest in convincing you of the image quality that the 50mm f/1.2 L is capable of. I think the photo I enclosed speaks for itself. If you need further proof I don't think any evidence I furnish will make a difference. The initial poster said he was unable to obtain a sharp photo at close distances and I think I've shown that you can. It is impossible on this forum to post any photos that really do this lens justice. In my opinion the 50L is one of Canon's best efforts and well worth the $1500 I paid for it. I've taken dozens of photos at all apertures and find it sharp at f/1.2 and it increases in sharpness as you stop down. The color and contrast is outstanding. If you want to really test it, go out and purchase your own so that you can answer the questions that you have about IQ. I'm not about to spend a lot of time trying to convince you that this is a great lens. Go spend the money and find out for yourself.
