3rd company AF-S compatible lenses

Hi,

May be my question sounds silly, but I couldn't find any mention of AF-S or AF-I

compatibility in description of any Tamron or Tokina lenses. So my actual

question is - how can I know what 3rd party lenses would work in AF mode with

Nikon D40 wich supports only AF-S and AF-I?

Tamron and Tokina do not offer compatible lenses. Sigma offers HSM in some lenses, their equivalent to AFS.

The only 3rd party lenses which will AF on the D40 are Sigma's HSM lenses.

It seems to me that the D40 isn't designed for photographers who will ever use more than the kit soom and maybe the longer kit-quality companion lens. I'd go with the D50 at least.

I believe Nikon will be making mostly all AF-S zoom lenses in the future. I wouldn't buy a

D50, I would look at the D80 in that case. I'd get a D40 before I got a D50, the D40 beats

the D50 in terms of overall image quality. Look at the D40 review on dpreview.

Sigma's web site offers a range specifically suited for the D40 . Visit www.sigmaphoto.com- on the home page itself they have a link NIKON D 40 compatible lenses. They have listed about 14 lenses here

Haven't tried out one myself yet ( Have just bought a D40) . So do let me know if you try out any of them

I have two of the HSM Sigma Lenses...both are of excellent build quality and take clear, sharp pictures...

 

APO 300mm F2.8 EX DG/HSM and APO MACRO 180mm F3.5 EX DG IF HSM

 

I would have no qualms substituting these lenses for Nikons versions.
