mountainvisions
I just updated (taking a leap of faith) using an internet link to the upcoming release of the K10D firmware on Jan 23rd. Many useful features, also it addresses the banding. Main useful feature is ISO is now configurable via the control wheels. I had been using the Av and Tv mode second dial as a EV comp dial (saving the need to press the EV comp button and turn a wheel). Now I will press the button for EV comp but the ISO can be changed on the fly with the opposite wheel for Av or Tv. New AF option. Now pressing the AF button can be configured to revert to center point when in selection mode. In anymode (that I've tried thus far) you can not only display the ISO when pressing the OK button but you can change the ISO by pressing OK and turning a control wheel. Well here is the info from the word doc included in the update. michael s.
<< ... Many useful features, also it addresses the banding. ... >> Are you certain about that, Justin ? Not arguing with you, but I ask because none of the listed items appear to pertain to the high iso banding that some have reported.
mountainvisions
the other doc i have list it. this only list the added functions, not the firmware "fixes" the functions are essentially bonuses. also, when they update firmware they don't always list every little upgrade. just to mention, pentax and nikon addressed the banding (D200) but even nikon said, the banding was a annomaly that occured in combination of many difficult lighting situations. I personally have not seen banding in any photo i've taken, all have been indoors in low ev sitiutions at ISO 640 to 1250. what i have seen is oddly colored noise at high iso in the shadows. not bands but odd colors (yellows and purples). the fix doesn't say it addresses that, however, i have heard that the next update will increase the bit depth captured after A/D converter from 12 to 16 bits. this would increase the gradiations by thousands per color. mountainvisions
As a test update the wireless does not work with the sigma 500 DG Super. It works fine with the 360FGZ. I am contacting sigma about this issue. If someone has a K100D Sigma 500 rechip please test this with the K10D, if the rechip works then this is a simple process for me. if the rechip doesn't work i have to cross my fingers sigma offers an update quickly. johnmarsden
Hi Justin - you are a brave man, well done!! Reading your download. Is the ISO now displayed constantly in the viewfinder and on the LCD panel or can the setting be quickly accessed? "?E ISO setting is being displayed in the view finder and on the LCD panel when setting the P/Tv Av/M/B/X mode and then ISO can change by turning e-dial. gil
In the current firmware, V1.0, you can view the ISO setting in the viewfinder or the top LCD setting by pressing the OK button. I still have the original firmware. regards Gil
Sandeha Lynch
With the new download firmware you can change the ISO as well as view it. Press the OK button to view, and spin the front wheel to change it. It's brill, and the wireless flash from the popup (master or control) has just saved me from turning to radio. mountainvisions
The expanded ISO features are far superior to 1.0 and moreover are actually exactly what everyone has been asking for. currently, you can merely look at your ISO with the OK button, once you load 1.10 you can changeyour ISO in any mode with the ISO button, and also program wheels in Av or Tv to change it. IMO, this isn't just a minor upgrade it is significant since it completely aknowledges that ISO is now a variable that needs quick adjustment in digital. Giving it a wheel is better then a button, and now it also has a dedicated button, the OK button. So the critics that complained that this wasn't professional enough because the ISO didn't have a button can now simmer down.
johnmarsden
Hi again Justin - was the firmware update easy ie what were the mecanics of this. And do you lose all your custom settings? I like the idea of the iso access options. Although I was playing with the TAV setting today. This is like hyperprogream on steroids with the ISO changing when you push the Av or Tv beyond whatever iso you are on. Would not want to upset this function. All the best pps can you revert back if not happy !! ?? ;-}

mountainvisions
easy as pie to install. charge batteries fully. load firmware on card (in the root directory, ie, not in any folders). turn on while holding the menu button. hit yes. DO NOT TURN OFF THE CAMERA UNTIL DONE. Voila, a beautiful new set of features, most are quite useful. And yes, pentax will release tomorrow, for me 4 days was too long to wait. andrewg_ny
Upgrade was fine for me as well. Kudos to Pentax for giving us a plethora of ISO control options. Custom settings are remembered after the upgrade, though you might want to run through them again because there may have been a small number that changed--in particular, I think they inserted a setting '2' for P-mode e-dials to put Tv in back and Av in front; if you had customized this setting before, your effective setting may have changed. -Andrew
