bill_keane2
I just opened my new D80, and as I move the camera lightly around I can hear a very light noise as if something like a moving part is moving inside the body. Is this normal? I attached a lens and it's the smae. I haven't powered it up.
ShunCheung
Modern SLRs have a little device inside to detect the orienation of the camera body, vertical or horizontal. That may be where this noise is coming come.
bill_keane2
AHHH... I was guessing that, because it happens when I rotate the body horizontal/vertical. Is this in the manual? Thanks!
bwcombs
No, it's in the camera... (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
bruno
Take care: accelerometers are electronic devices (http://www.dimensionengineering.com/accelerometers.htm), they will make no noise... so please make a phone call to Nikon and ask if this is normal (or go to the shop and try with a new one to see if it makes noise). johndc
I've heard that the rattling is caused by the flash tube. One way to find out is to keep shaking the camera until Nikon sends you an itemized repair bill. ;)
mawz
Bruno: The camera doesn't use an accelerometer to detect orientation, their sole use is in VR lenses. The orientation sensor is just a small ball bearing in a tube.
johndc
"The orientation sensor is just a small ball bearing in a tube." I thought it was a mercury switch. I don't know where I got that idea from, though.
bill_keane2
It's a normal sound from the horizontal/vertical orientation mechanism. Funny, I thought it sounded something like a ball-bearing!
timberwulf
Yup! Every Nikon dSLR I've ever handled has made that little clunky sound. :)
