benny_spinoza
I have a 50mm f1.2 lens that I can use with the F6, but because it is a non- CPU lens, the F6 uses color matrix metering instead of the 3D color matrix metering when using the lens. Am I missing out with a non-CPU lens? The new 50mm f1.8D AF lens is almost being given away by Nikon, so I suppose I can buy that for 3D color matrix metering. Does anybody have actual real-world experience with color matrix metering vs. 3D-color matrix metering?
wisp
are your photos exposed properly? - if you have no issues with the exposure your camera is giving you, I wouldn't worry about it. You lose more than a stop going from 1.2 to 1.8 my $0.
erik_loza
Non-issue.
benny_spinoza
I just got the F6. I'll be testing it, for course. But I just wanted to know if others had tested this sort of thing before.
hugh_davis
Second to Erik, although I have heard the D info is more important for flash, particularly i-TTL. Note that the earliest AF Nikkors have CPU's but not the D chip, so they'll put you in non-3D metering also. I haven't seen any difference though, on film (F5, F100, N90s)or in digital (D70, D80), with either my MF's or my non D AF's. --HWD
benny_spinoza
Coming from the dinosaur age of a FM, one of the great features for me is the iTTL with balance fill flash. Is the distance information important for that feature?
wisp
I have a D200 - same issue with non 'D' lenses (this is actually the important part for the 3D, not whether it is CPU or not (except, all 'D' lenses are CPU lenses, just not all CPU lenses are D lenses)) I haven't noticed any problems in exposure - Color matrix metering is almost perfect most of the time -IME (in my experience) - obviously this is dependent on subject, but... johndc
Benny- Distance information is important for the use of direct flash in iTTL -- it's less important when bouncing. However, for available light photography it's a non-issue.
Ed_Ingold
The F6 uses fuzzy logic to determine exposure. 3D information is used for TTL flash, but just as important for problematic situations like white dresses in front of dark foliage, backlighting and silhouettes.
