tim a
My friend just got a d-200 and he said that it does no in camera sharpening, j- peg or raw. Is the d-80 the same? I know that it has a setting for more sharpening, but if you leave the camera defaults, does it do any sharpening on its own? either jpeg or raw? erik_loza
You can select whatever you like. I use no in-camera sharpening and prefer to do it in PS. It's just personal preference, really. Good luck.
alan_olander1664878205
The D200 default setting for sharpening is "Auto", meaning the camera will adjust sharpening depending on the subject. You can set it to anything you want, "None" all the way to "High". With a RAW image you can change it later. You're stuck with it with a JPEG, however. mick stephenson
Still, it's a good idea to leave sharpening 'on' if you're shooting jpeg. If you do get some compression artefacts, sharpening later will mean sharpening those rather than actual detail. The camera, on the other hand, will 'intelligently' sharpen the image *before* compression, resulting in a sharper-looking shot than you could ever achieve afterwards in PShop. frank_skomial
D200 Manual on page 49 tells you that D200 has the following settings for in-camera sharpening: Auto, Normal, Medium, Medium Low, Medium High, and High. I think that is plenty of sharpenning that you could apply. Tell this to your friend.
Sanford
I tried in-camera sharpening with the D80 and jpeg and got some nasty surprises. Best left on "normal" and sharpened later is PS.
frank_skomial
Sorry for the page number was wrong. It was on page 46 for the D200 camera. The page tells you that you can apply more or less sharpening, and you have so many steps to vary amount of sharpening. No wondering through the book ? No curiosity to notice the menu for sharpening ? Good luck on reading the book and trying your cameras, as you both need a lot of it.
anthony_bez
Steve, Frank is only suggesting you read the manual, and take lots of photographs.
bahrammonshat
Agree with Frank. One save some time reading the manual rather than throwing questions in here. Cheers.
