30D and Flash Metering

Need some clarification on the 30D flash metering. My 10D like all previous

bodies(?) switched over to evaluative metering mode if I recall correctly. I

know that the 30D is E-TTL II but does that change the metering mode? Manual

isn't specific on this topic.

Metering default is always Evaluative. If that doen't tickle your pickle, you may enable CF

14.1, Averaging." However it also disabls auto fill flash reduction, so you'll have to roll your

own via FEC.

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.

ETTL uses the entire evaluative metering area. Metering is strongly biased by the focus point. CF14=1 disables the focus point bias. With CF14=0, it is important to use FEL to ensure that the focus point is over a neutral tone, which is seldom the case if you do not use FEL.

ETTL-II uses the entire evaluative metering area, but the metering is UNAFFECTED by the focus point. CF14=1 turns off alot of other correction factors in the ETTL-II metering math.
