blowingsky
Just came back from lunch in Sherman Oaks. Saw a man with an M8 and an R28mm adapted to it with a big rectangular shade and a Voigtlander viewfinder. It looked about as big as any current digital SLR with a mid-range zoom. He was happy, though. Said he has a software program that handles the magenta cast. Looked like he needed a tripod. With sandbags.
nels
So how was lunch?
nels
Anyway, rather than wait for your response, let me tell you what I had for lunch today. A lousy pastrami sandwich. How difficult is it to screw up a simple pastrami on rye with mustard recipe? Apparently very dificult. Outside of NYC, I have only accidentally stumbled upon a couple of places in Kaliphornia that do justice to this staple of NYC that could potentially be made anywhere equally well. Incompetence and poor standards are all over the place if you look for them.
dan flanders
I think the "Kalipornia" chefs also came up with the notion of putting the mayo on the bottom half of the hamburger bun so that you have a handfull of mush after the first bite! harvey_trautenberg1
The problem was probably the lack of a proper steam cabinet. I have been a vegetarian for 27 years. The one thing I miss is a combo pastrami and corned beef on rye with 1000 island and cole slaw on the sandwich. PLEASE have one for me.
Uhooru
sounds like making an interesting sandwich is almost as hard as making an interseting photograph.
blowingsky
I had a meatball panini, salad and ice tea. I'm supposed to be rigorously working at getting my cholestrol down, but I figure that I am supposed to be doing LOTS of things that I probably never will. I am supposed to never shoot a film camera without testing it first. Well, that went by the wayside as soon as I got out of Fred Picker's Zone System Class way back in the early 70's. blowingsky
Billy's in Glendale. Canters in West L.A. (or whatever that 'taint area is called), there's a place up on 3rd St. in Burbank, near Ikea. But if you take the blue pill, you suddenly realize that it ain't NYC. mark_amos
Hey Jeff, I don't travel a lot, but I happen to have eaten at Nate n' Al's in Beverly Hills. As often happens, I didn't quite have the guts to get the better shots I wanted there, but the sandwich was great.

nels
Peter, was it a flavored ice tea? Never leave out such important details when discussing lunch.
Uhooru
Cantor's Pastrami is good, but their cornedbeef is as good as anywhere. Likewise for Kaiser rolls, try Diamond's on Fairfax about a block down from Cantors. Get em fresh in the morning...amazing.
canfred
Thank's all , now when I get to NYC I will know where to dine .Most important you just cannot run on empty. Here we do not have such sophisticated options of couse there is Macca & colonel Sanders.

michael s.
Oops. Misread the post above the photos. Now I got the picture: that *is* the bakery.
blowingsky
Nels, It was a vintage Orange Pekoe with a rather sassy nose full of black currant and cherry with a hint of saffron and a galloping lemon pepper finish. Ice cubes were hand carved from the Fitchner Ice Shelf. Unfortunately, the ice tea was brutally overpowered by the meatball Panini which screamed for a hoppy ale, but alas, a work day. Uhooru
That's Diamond's bakery, the Kaiser roll capital of the world. Good Rye and pumpernickl too. Beef is up the street at Canotr's.

eliot_rosen1
Sorry, just another example of incompetence. "fuits" should be "fruits". :-)
nels
<i>"fuits" should be "fruits"</i><p> Could it be that you had your "fuit" in your mouth to cause you to slur that way, Eliot?
