jim_hully
Does anyone know of a graduated filter that is truly graduated from one side to the other? In other words, without the not-so-subtle change in the middle of the glass. This can be a circular filter or one that fits Cokin's P system. Thanks Jim
marcelo_p._lima
Jim, I think you're talking about a "hard-edged" graduated filter, as opposed to a soft-edged one. Singh-Ray makes these and a huge variety of them--they even custom make them for you. I don't have any yet(they're expensive, about $100 each) but B&H sells them (they also sell direct). They fit the Cokin P system.
michael_moon
When you say "without the not-so-subtle change in the middle of the glass", do you mean a sharp change, or a continuous gradation from one edge to the other? The former exists (see above), but I've never heard of the latter. But it would certainly have applications - anyone know if this filter exists? jim_hully
I was obviously not making myself clear about the "not-so-subtle" graduated filters. What I am looking for is one that starts at one edge with clear optical glass/resin and gradually darkens across the WHOLE filter such that the it reachs the correct density factor on the opposite s
rapfoto
Lee calls these "blender's", or something like that. I have one [it is 4x6 inches] I'm sure the above mentioned mfg.'s offer top-to-bottom graduated filters.
john_macpherson
Jim - Singh-Ray make a graduated ND that starts clear at the bottom and has a "soft-step" in the middle which gradually darkens to the top where the full (eg 2x stop) density occurs. Contrast this with the "hard-step" which comes to the middle clear and then has a distinct step to the full 2x ND density. The former is Singh-Ray ND-2G-SS for the 2x stop density. See the Singh Ray website for prices. They fit Cokin P size holders perfectly. They are extra long as well which is handy (120mm). Lee make filters like this too, and Hi-tech.<P><P
serge_boucher
The Cokin 121F (Full) is a 2-stop filter with the gradiation you describe. I have no reason to believe it is more colour-neutral than the other cokin grads, though... Some filter brands take custom orders : one could try Lee, Hitech or Singh-ray.
