robd
Will the larger Cf cards 512, 1gb and over work in the D1's? I had a memory vendor tell me that the D1's max out at 256mb cards and just want to confirm before I buy. Thanks in advance for any answers. erik_loza
I ran the Sandisk Extreme II 1gb card on our D1H with no problems for over a year. Sounds like bogus advice to me.
mike_schram1
Compact Flash Type II cards can be used with no problem to at least 1 gig size. A fast write speed helps. D1s aren't really quick at writing to the card.
louisb1
I used a 2GB Kingston CF in my D1X, if that helps. LouisB
Karim Ghantous
It's a case of Chinese Whispers I think. The D1 doesn't handle Microdrives that well. The D1H and any camera after it are okay though. The vendor probably was told that Microdrives can't be used and eventually got it confused with larger memory. In his mind there was a restriction and it morphed into the wrong one.
mark_korabo
The D1H & D1X support up to 2 Gig cards.
pnance
The problem is actually a FAT32 problem. Cards that at formatted FAT32 can't be read, if reformatted they will be smaller than their rated sizes. For instance a 4 GB card would format as a 2 GB card, and very hard to reformat back. The FAT32 standard was created to address the larger sizes available, it is needed for sizes larger than 2 GB.
doug_hughes
I've been using 256 and 512 SanDisk Compact Flash cards without any issues.
brett_davis1
I use 1 GB CF cards in my D1 with no problem. Haven't tried any larger than that.
tom_luongo1
I've used a Sandisk 2GB card with no problem. Sandisk makes a 4GB card that has a switch that lets you select between two separate 2GB FAT16 partitions but why bother. The 2GB card is enough for over 1,400 "fine" mode jpegs. ShunCheung
Given the original release date for the D1, i.e. fall of 1999, the FAT 16 file system may be the limit. In that case it'll max out at 2G. I have a D100 from 2002 and it uses FAT 32 and therefore has no problems with 4G CF cards.
robd
Thanks everyone for your help. Lot's of good info. Brett's answer pretty much gives me what I needed to know. I don't think I'll go any bigger then 1gb cards, since I don't like to keep too many eggs in one basket. And his positive experience with the 1gb cards pretty much sums it up. Thanks again.
