stuart_bestbier
I just bought an af-s 17-35 and while everything seems fine I am surprised at the amount of noise it makes in af mode when is hunts. It focuses quickly but makes a relatively high pitched sound, almost like a screech / squeak. Is this normal? I thought these lenses were meant to be dead quite in af mode. Any insights would be greatly appreciated - should I send it back?
ShunCheung
Some AF-S lenses do that occasionally. I have that same problem with my 28-70mm/f2.8 once in a while. It is definitely not normal if that happens frequently. Is your lens new (instead of 2nd hand)? I would send it back for a replacement.
stanley_chao
I have the same problem with mine too, sent to Nikon for sevice, comes back with the same result. I try to loosen it up by focusing back and forth from closest to infinity, after 5 or 6 trips , the noise seems to go away. Before the service it took about 30 trips back and forth before the noise disappears. I really don't know what causing it , but the local camera store told me it is because the lens is lack of used. BTW, I bought it second hand on *bay.
ShunCheung
This is definitely not normal. If Nikon cannot fix it under warranty, I would certainly demand a replacement. If nothing else, it can affect the resale value for your lens.
stuart_bestbier
I called dealer and they said it is from lack of use and that the lens must have been standing for a while. I also let it focus from 0 to infinity a number of times and the noise has indeed gone away. Can't say I like what it did though given its price. Thnaks for the feedback
pc_b
Hi Stuart, my 80-200 does it too. Would cost around 450USD to replace the motor which is supposed to be the source of the noise, according to Nikon. It's not detrimental to lens alignment (i.e. lens elements will not rattle loose) and AF performance, they added. Well-well! I think my lens is a tad slower now. Cheers, Peter
andrew_cole3
Would you buy a Rolls that made unusual noises ? not if you had it new...the fault could be the SWM, in which case it would cost a lot to replace or it could just be 'dry' ... other than that I would be concerned of impending failure from friction... if its a used purchase then take a chance but don't pay over the odds..about 2/3rds the second hand price would be enough..
