john_davids
In a moment of extreme stress and distraction, I left my XT and tam 18-200 on the back of my car, and pulled out into traffic... it fell off, and got partially run over by another car. I havent tried powering it on yet, however, it looks like the lens mount is severly bent and the mirror is cracked, basically it is "totaled" Interestingly, the rear of the camera looks ok. Is there any salvage value, ie the CCD? (If not, im just going to use it as a "cadaver" to practice retrofitting the hot filter for IR conversion.) jim_mcdonald1
Am sorry to hear of your bad time John. It sounds like your cam is finished. Re-fitting costs on things electronic are prohibitive of course. Would suggest you try taking a pic if the lens is in any way intact. Please don't try mounting a new lens on a bent mount. I hope your day improves. Jim

alfaromeo
not sure if you have a wife ot not, but this will be a great justification of why you need a new camera
mike_kan1
Unless you have good mechanical skills and the electronics seem to be in some kind of working order, it is better not to disturb the camera. This is a good " watch maker's special " that would be a economic way that a relatively low income person to rebuld into a nice working camera. If you are good with mechanical stuff, this would be an excellent candidate camera to rebuild. From your discription only the lens. mount and part of the reflex mirror was damaged. Had repaired an old 300d that had six areas of broken electrical interconnects and one wrong focusing screen shim. This is now my personal camera. Not into commercial repairs and treat this strictly as a hobby that I enjoy.

pturton
Your plan to use the body for practice surgery sounds like the best idea. The cost for repair by Canon or other shop will be beyond the cost of a new body. Times like this requires a reflection on the misfortunes of those living in Dafur, North Korea or such.
