Does anyone know what species of tree these are? They are located in

Mendocino County in Northern California, about 5 miles inland, around

500 feet elevation, in a low-lying/riparian area. (They're not

necessarily unique or endemic to that area, however. I saw some a

couple hundred miles further north the day before.)

My research on Calflora.org and Google Images was inconclusive, but

points to birch or alder (red or white).

Thank you!<div>00FYRH-28654484.jpg.7489c95ee12199975fef5166c7b012d9.jpg</div>

Hard to see 'em but I'd go with Alder over Birch. In Washington we have a lot of Alder that look long, spindly, and weaker like that. My experience with Birch would show lower, fuller branches and a slightly thicker, more stately trunk. White Birch have a brighter, more uniform "peeling paper" bark.

But I'm no tree expert.
