bob_koester
Hi, I picked up a used Nikon S rangefinder and 50 f2 lens yesterday for $250 at the advice of forum members. I was on Steve Gandy's sight studying a little about this camera. At the bottom of the page, I came across "rarities," and he mentions eight digit numbers. I looked at the serial number on the camera I bought and it has eight digits: #60910xxx. There is also a little red dot centered just below the number. I'm not a collector, and I hope get this fixed up to use. Any input on this camera? Thanks. Bob
vivek iyer
Get it fixed if all the parts are there and use it. Good price for the set. The lens alone should be worth the price.
klix
You definitely got a collectible. Before you get it fixed up, find out if "fixing it up" will impact its collectibility. Only 1215 Nikon S cameras were made with 8 serial numbers that start with 60910. After that, the 8-digit serial numbers were 61000XXX. Also, a very small batch of Nikon S cameras were built for Life magazine. They were finished in black, and have extra large wind and rewind knobs. I'm not sure how/if this affects collectibility. Don't know about the red dot. You might want to contact the Nikon Historical Society in Chicago. KL
bob_koester
Hi, I just sent it off to DAG. Any other opinions? Should I tell him to send it back or just go ahead. Bob
rolleiflex users
Bob, nothing wrong with the RED DOT. That red dot indicates the FILM PLANE only! I have two Nikon S camera and both with 7 digits serial number. Eight digit Nikon S are far expensive and dificult to find than 7 digit! Thats a beautiful camera and I like that heavy feel in my hands and they produces excellent quality pictures too! Congratulations and take some pictures soon!
