aurelio
Hello friends, I have got a problem with my Epson 3170 scanner, I often get such longitudinal stripes on the scans (see example pic) What could be the reason and how to fix it? Thanks in advance
jtk
Looks like scratched film (handling). You wouldn't see it in a small (minilab) print or with a soft enlarger.
Mike Howard
Put the film in the other direction and scan again. If it's in the same place, it's a scratch, if it's on the other side, it's a scanner issue.
dan_linne1
I have the same thing on my 3170. I think it's a problem with the scanner. Mine is headed for the garbage can.
jtk
So there you have it Aurelio: Toss it, per Dan, or do a simple test, perMichael. Or just pray over it, per my President.
freehueco
Funny, I prayed over my 3170, and it works fine... Yeah, rotate and rescan. If it's a scratch, it's a fairly easy photoshop job to clone the line out.
aurelio
I had already made the rotation test, scratch position does vary, so it is the scanner Maybe the sensor is just dirty or it is an electronical issue Is Epson service any good? jon_noble
The longitudinal scratch which most people are referring to is caused by dust in the calibration area (area at the top of the scanner where it meets plastic). However, in this case it is most definetly a scratch on your film. The line is not constant in width (it thins out to almost nothing at 1 point). You say it moves about when the film is moved? that has nothing to do with the scanner
aurelio
Hi Jon, How can I remove dust from calibration area? Should I disassemble the scanner? It is not a scratch on film, because if I put a 35mm stripe in the other slide, the line disappears. If I reverse the film, it appears in another position
jon_noble
The dust will be on the glass surface. on no account open the scanner up cus you need to be in a 100% dust free environment to stop more dust getting in. just wipe the dust with a lens cloth
jon_noble
just read the second hand of your message. im sorry what you are describing is a scratch on the film. think about it. if you move the film and the line moves what does that suggest? nothing else has been changed, and as i stated previously, if it was a scanner issue the line would be constant and (if scanned in colour) would have constant colour strips. The line would also not move unless more dust got in or you didnt clean the cali' area properly
