skip hansen
Help! Today, I discovered a couple of small, dark, sharply definedspecks in the middle of my viewfinder. They don't appear on any imagesand they are there with every lens in the same position. Like I said, they don't appear on images...I have cleaned the sensor, theviewfinder mirror, the eye piece, both ends of the lenses (althoughsince they are there with every lens, that shouldn't matter anyway).Any suggestions? Thanks.
mark_chappell
It's almost certainly dust on the focusing screen (apparently the one thing you didn't clean). This is above the mirror in the mirror chamber. It's nothing to worry about -- these specks will not appear in images (out of the light path when the mirror is up). If they annoy you so much that you try to clean the focusing screen, be very careful -- usually these screens are made of a soft, easily scratched plastic or resin. jimstrutz
If the specs are stuck to the bottom of the viewfinder screen, a soft brush or small blower should get it, but if they landed on the top side they will generally look more sharpley in focus and be more difficult to remove. I would, and do, ignore them if they are above the viewscreen, but the screen is fairly easy to remove for cleaning if you are really annoyed. For instructions do a google search for Haoda or Katz Eye, who sell replacement screens, and post links to instructions with pictures.
