humminbird
I got a SB-600 for my Coolpix 5700 last year and 5700 broke last month. I decided not to repair it and got a Canon 30D. I know I will need a new Canon brand flash. I also would like to get two or more slaves to take the hummingbird picture in my backyard. The requirements for this purpose, as I read from online articles, are: 1. high GN, > 100; 2. Manual ouput control; 3. Min. duration < 1/20,000 sec. I am new in photogrphy and need help to determine 1. Can I re-use SB-600 as a slave and how? 2. What are the cheapest option for to add more slaves for this purpose (hummingbirds)? I have been reading extensively, but have not gotten answer. The local store seems only interested selling me Canon, which I don't belive is the only option. Thanks! -Ted
manitas
You would have to get an optical slave for digital flash. Wein makes one that you attach to the hotshoe attachement on your SB-600. I would be suspect of any camera store that tried to push one brand on me over another. As far as I know, Nikon's CLS flash system is better than Canon's own system, for the time being. beno_t_marchal
As David said. Unfortunately the SB-600 cannot operate in SU-4 so you will need an external cell to trigger it.
Be warned that if you mix and match brands, you're loosing TTL: in that sense the store is right, buying Canon would be more convenient. You will need to set every flash (Nikon & Canon) in manual mode (I assume it's possible with Cano but I have no experience with the brand) and compute the exposure with a flashmeter (or by trial-error with the histogram).
--ben
hotduckz
Hi, Do you know Nikon Creative Lighting Flash? I don't know why you choose 30D but read me. Canon 30D was 1,324 USD (body only) in Adorama, Nikon D200 was 1,699 USD it's true. But I think you not know D200 can use Creative Lighting Flash, this system get you wireless TTL flash. In the canon side you need to change your SB-600 and go to Canon EX flash that you loose some of your money and then if you need to play wireless TTL flash you'll need to buy Canon ST-E2 for a function with. That ST-E2 was pricing on 199.95 USD, worth to switch? Last, with Nikon CLS you can use D200 pop up to fill-in flash but 30D + ST-E2 isn't!! humminbird
Thanks for the help! I sold the SB-600 and got three Vivitar 283s for slaves with some $ left. It does not sound right in most cases, but fits my application well enough.
