kalin_ivanov
I just purchased an Epson 4990. There is something that is bothering me and I'd like to hear what you think. I haven't done a lot of scanning and I know that I lack expertise. When I preview the scanning area I noticed that it is unevenly lit. Is that something I should worry about? Please, help me! Thanks!

matt_kime
Its extremely common. I always try to stick to the middle of the scan bed.
erik scanhancer
Did you clean the glass?
kalin_ivanov
Yes, I cleaned the glass. I guess this is a common thing and it doesn't mean that the scanner is not functioning properly.
hakon_soreide
Unless you're going to scan all-white pictures, the dfferences in illumination will be very small for actual use, so I wouldn't worry about it.
kalin_ivanov
I'll take your advise and I won't worry about it. Thank you for your help and your time. I appreciate it.
rconey
I have the Epson 4870 and rarely see problems carry through to the final print, although this sort of background disturbs me also. On whites there are at times some off color smudges. i think this is the price you pay for a flat bed scanner.
hclim
I never noticed in my scanned negs. If you are scanning a white document, you need to set the gamma or brightness in the preview before the actual scan.
custom film holders for fl
If this is just a blanks scan in reflective mode (like when scanning a page of paper), it is nothing to worry about. You most likely are seeing the waves and impefections of the padded side of the insert in the lid (which covers the light source for scanning film).
Doug
Dougs MF Film Holder for batch scanning of 120/220 medium format film with flatbeds
