james_taylor11
The IS version is a little out of my reach. Just wondering what I should expect to pay for this lens. Thanks, James
John Crowe
Check eBay, keh.com, adorama.com and bhphotovideo.com for typical prices. The lowest price I have seen and this was some time ago was about $700 USD with most in the $800-900 range. Not bad for a superb lens.
PuppyDigs
They really hold their value so expect to pay $700-900 for a nice one, a few hundred less for skinned off beater. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
neil_v.
KEH.com has an "EX"-grade used non-IS at the moment for $820, which is only $300 less than a *new IS* at B&H. On eBay, where used EF lenses often sell for B&H new price, used copies of the non-IS 300/4L recently sold for $600-$930. If I were buying a used non-IS in excellent-or-better condition from a reputable private party outside of eBay, I'd expect to pay $500-$600. jim_mueller
I think used non-IS 300/4's are over valued. The slightly better MTF scores don't compensate for the lack of IS. I would buy a used or new 300/4 IS version instead. But that's just me!
jim_larson1
I agree with Jim. Considering a 300/4L-IS is about $1100, the used prices for the 300/4L seem higher than what a new price should be for that lens.
tony_c2
I frequently see the 300 IS for about $900-950 on other photo Buy & Sell boards.
bobatkins
The 300/4L holds it's value because it's a very, very good lens. At around $700 for a clean one, it's a bargain. I've had mine ever since it was released and it's been a great lens. I really have not been tempted to trade it in for the IS version (which I have used). The new 70-300/4-5.6 IS is now my small, portable 300mm lens with IS. It's very sharp, even at 300mm wide open. The size and weight (and zoom) make it a better "walk around" 300mm lens than the 300/4L IS. The older 75-300IS wasn't an alternative (not sharp enough wide open at 300mm), but the new lens is. james_taylor11
Thanks for all the great info! I think I will keep my open for a non IS version for around 700-800. Anything over that and I would probably start looking at the IS version for a few hundred more. Thanks again, James Taylor
