b_va
My brother just gave me his 50mm 1.8f Nikkor S 1103xxx and I would like to convert it for use on my D200 as a portrait lens. Before doing so I would like the thoughts of those who have done the same as far as: Who would you recommend perform the conversion (NYC area is preferable) What was your user experience post conversion? How much should I expect to pay for the conversion? In your experience was the conversion worthwhile. and What is a viable alternative in the current crop of auto focus D lens? Thank you for your thoughts.

lilly_w
...alternatively, you could acquire a new 50mm f1.8 AF-D for about US$110 or used for a bit less. Incidentally, you may want to have a closer look at the lens your brother gave you. If it's an f1.8 it doesn't need converting; to the best of my knowledge, all Nikon 50/1.8's were either AI or AIS and, thus, compatible w/ your D200 as far as metering. walterh
I may be wrong but the serial number seems odd for an S lens. It is not an series E ?
b_va
Thanks for your help, my mistake, the lens is a f/1.4 50mm Nikkor-S. I love the "feel" of the lens and like the idea of the ancient matched to the modern.
lee hamiel
I may be wrong but I think based on the serial number that what you have is a rangefinder Nikkor S 50 f/1.4 lens - if so there is no simple way to use this with your camera. My son has this same lens but uses it with an S2 & the image quality is great - so - if I am right - keep it & buy a Nikon S2 in order to use it:) Short answer - buy a 50 f/1.8 or 1.4 AF lens for the D200. Have fun
