rian_d.
my m4p took a nasty spill last night, right on the lens. as i was trying to screw off what remained of the filter, the front lens peice, just below the aperture ring, started to rotate and became loose. i screwd it back till it got tight. is this okay or did i really f*ck up? is this section of the lens suppossed to screw off? will my picture still be sharp? harvey_trautenberg1
The same thing happened to my lens. I don't know hoe the filter got smashed though. I sent the lens in for the filter to be machined off and the lens set straight after it started to rotate. The whole job took a few days total and about $60 if i recall. Bottom line is get it done right the first time.
al_kaplan1
Yup, that part of the lens screws off. You likely did no damage by unscrewing it and tightening it again. Your photos should be just as sharp as they were before the accident.
rian_d.
thanks al. any advice for getting my dented filter ring off? by the way, the self portraits are great, they should be a book.
robert_m3
Taking off a sticking filter ring by gripping it and turning it often doesn't work because you're actually deforming the ring slightly and it grips more. Put the ring face down, on a rubber gripping mat on a flat surface and then turn the lens body.
charcoal
Another old trick to avoid the deformation that Robert just mentioned is to pinch the filter ring at just one place on the edge and try to unscrew it that way. Good luck!
travis1
happened to my 50/2 once. I unscrewed the whole piece off while removing the filter. I thought I just burned $500 but then when I screwed it back, the pix got sharper.
