Need help quick!!! URGENT!!!

David,

A quick Google on "Sigma 18-125 lens" brought up a good deal of info. From what little I read, it seems to be an average lens. I assume you are using a digital SLR since that is what this lens is designed for. As far as the two different versions, I checked B&H, Adorama, and 17th Street Photo (i.e. some well-reviewed stores), and only Abes sells the slg version. I don't know what that's all about, but I'd be a bit suspicious. As far as retailers being in business to make money - well sure, that's the idea, but when they have a vested interest in selling you one product over another, you should accept their comments with a bit of skeptisism. But, as the saying goes, live and learn. Whatever lens you end up with, I imagine it will work fine, so enjoy it.

Save the URGENTS!!! for things like your child is on fire, how do I put him out? questions.

1. They make more off the Sigmas, thats why they pushed them on you.

2. Build wise Sigmas are cheap, and dont take much to kill them.

They may not work on your next camera either. They have low resale value. They make some with good optics. Stick with the nikons.

3. Abes will be calling back soon to sell you more Extras like the things that normally come with the camera...Hope you nailed them down on shipping or thats gonna hurt.

i found out the difference between the slg and the dc. ah crap, i forgot what rating she said each one was. i think it was that the slg has a d rating and the dc has a g... i might already have it mixed up.

basically she said that its the type of material and coating they use for the glass in the slg version. also, the slg has macro capability while the dc does not. AND, the slg has a metal mount while the dc does not.

<p>David,</p>

<p>I don't know man, the slg version is so new that Sigma itself doesn't even know about it. Look <a href="http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all.asp">here</a>.</p>

<p>And I don't know if any lens was ever made with a plastic mount, but surely not one as new as the Sigma, no matter what the version. I think that coating line is bull as well, as is the rating. I never saw any kind of rating mentioned in lens specs, though I'm admittedly not an expert.</p>

<p>And on Abe's site, both lenses have the exact same description. You'd think the differences would have been highlighted given the price difference. You might want to rethink that order if it isn't too late, and head over to B&H or the like.</p>

<I>"... the slg has a metal mount while the dc does not."</i>

<P>

Well, according to the Sigma site (presumably a very reliable source of info on Sigma products) the DC version DOES have a metal mount. Ahhh ... the good old "metal mount vs. plastic mount" sales pitch.<P>

<img src="http://www.sigmaphoto.com/images/LensesImage/95_small.jpg"><P>

Looks metal to me. Still convinced your buddies at Abe's are giving you good purchasing advice?<P>

You may be perfectly happy with what you get, and the Sigma is likely a fine lens, but face it ... you've been suckered into parting with significantly more money than first intended when you placed your order.<p>

Of interest, I note that the Nikkor 18~70DX is listed on Abe's site as "no box". Now what does that tell you? It tells me that they are removing the 18~70 from Nikon supplied D70 kits (along with some other supplied accessories I'm sure).<P>

I hope this works out for you ...

okay guys... im royally pissed right now. we'll see how much more pissed i get once the stuff comes in the mail.

i called sigma and they know nothing about the "slg".

then i called abes and told them that sigma said that and they gave me some BS answer to try and cover it up... like maybe it came from a different distributer or some crap like that.. im just going to check out the lens once i get it and do a few tests and most likely send it back if im not totally satisfied with it..... hm, but i dont even know how will i know its a POS or not.

oh, and i didnt pay anything extra, they just offered to swap out the lenses.

but f*** it. im going to send it back whether it says slg on the barrel or not. ill just ask for my money back and leave it at that... then go to a local place that i should have bought from even thought it may be more expensive.

The topic is "Need help quick!!! URGENT!!!"

That won't be a particularly helpful topic to anyone searching the archives if the thread does indeed get archived.

Some more care in choosing a topic title might get you some more specific replies. As it stands, I don't see a single reply that's off topic. Hmm, except maybe this one. And all of them were helpful in one way or another. But even this reply was helpful, and therefore on topic, though it wasn't "quick!!!".

David,

One of my first lens purchases was from some slugs called "AAA Camera." Like you, I was anxious to get the lens and thought I'd found a great deal. I should have known when they tried to sell me a lens hood for $25 that I was being ripped off, but I let things go (after refusing the hood). After a month or so of getting the run-around, I finally got the lens. Turns out the damn thing had a hood anyway. I was lucky that all turned out ok, but I definitely learned a lesson from that experience, and in the long run, the lens actually cost me more than it would have from a reputable dealer. While buying locally is a fine idea, be aware that there are some very good sources for photo gear on the internet. B&H Photo Video, 17th Street Photo, Delta International, J&R Music and Computer World, and Buydig.com are some that many, including myself, have had very successful dealings with. There are others as well. Pay heed to the neighbor to neighbor section on this site and resellerratings.com, and you should be fine. Good luck with your lens, and feel free to post your experience in the neighbor to neighbor section. Abe's had been getting a lot of good press, and it's apparent that it may not all have been valid. Maybe people will sell out for $5 afterall.

I just hope that you won't get scammed too much and end up with a lens that actually works

for you or with your money back in your bank account.

You said that you did a lot of research before deciding on the Nikkor. Then why in the world

would you listen to a salesperson and trust him/her more than the more objective

information you hopefully found online? Ah well, I hope you'll learn from this experience. But

don't feel bad, it can happen to anyone.
