mykol
Hi all, I wondered if anyone could point me to any info or perhaps offer any advice on photographing glass (perhaps within a still life scene). I'm using D70 & studio strobes (but simply using the modelling lights and long exposures so I can see the effects) Thanks in advance.
j._scott_schrader
Large softbox close to the subject will give you a long continuous reflection of the softbox that will define the shape of the glass object. Use your strobes for the exposure instead of your modeling lights. The color temperature will be improved by using the strobes.
brooks short
Mike The still life in your PhotoNet gallery is quite nice, as are your portraits. If you look in the administration section of this Lighting Forum you'll find archived lighting themes, some of which deal with photographing glass. jmf
Are you shooting smooth glass like a wine bottle or cut glass? I've been playing with shooting some of my wife's crystal (as in Waterford). I've been shooting on a white sweep, but controling the light so that it upsweeps to middle gray which acts as a nice background. Using 3' and 5' Octoboxs above and kicked forward. I'm getting nice translucent highlights in the facets, but I need to add a little sparkle. I've got some grids I'll try next on another head to add some hard light. Probably won't have shooting time till the w/e.

kentphoto
You can use a black piece of card/foam and place it so that it gives the object a defining black edge.
