Olympus ORF files and Capture 1

OK, Bas. The E-1 arrived last night. What a beautiful piece of

equipment, as well as the 14-54. I can see what everyone's said about

the white balance system- looks to be very accurate and the JPEGS

I've shot so far with basic settings with one or two wrinkles added

look great out of the camera- something I've not be accustomed to.

Still lots of reading to do- this body seems to be much more

customizeable than the 10D I've been using up to now.

I shot a few files last night in RAW capture. The Olympus Studio

software was fun- crashed my Dell the first time I tried it.. think

I'll just stick with the Olympus Viewer. Went to Capture One & did a

few files & noticed the jagged line syndrome I've read about before

in the high quality JPEGS that I output. Probably need to do a little

tweeking of the perameters I had setup to work my Canon RAW files. Do

you have any tips as to how you run your RAW files through C1? Like I

said though, the SHQ mode looks extremely useable, even with the FL-

50 flash unit- looks much more user friendly. Couldn't get it to

severely underexpose, which was a problem I had with the Canon's

until I started using the flash exposure compensation and being more

careful as to where I placed the active focusing point within the

scene.

I have an E-1 and have been using Adobe Elements 3.0 to process the ORF files. I have been very pleased with the results. I recently upgraded to Photoshop CS2 with the Camera Raw 3.2 plug-in and have been even more pleased taking the ORF files to JPG for high-end printing.

By the way, love the E-1. Also have a 20D in the shop here and except for a very few features, prefer the E-1 over the 20D. My true love is still my Canon F-1 - the "tank". Runs with or without batteries, takes a lick'n and keeps on click'n :-)

From what I've read, generally C1 is not the tool of choice for E1 ORFs. I've heard quite a few times now of ex 10D+C1 users being a bit disappointed with the E1+C1 combination.

Olympus Studio gives nice colour, but as you've found out it's an unstable PITA, and to be honest the interface reminds me of something from Windows 3.11..

Rawshooter is nice, but so far there's no proper profile for the E1, and the colours come out a bit bizarre; far from the 3D Olympus look everyone mentions. It does give quite brilliant resolution though.

I made the switch to Adobe Camera Raw recently and so far have been very impressed. It does some amazing things with the highlights (it appears to be able to recover up to a whole stop or more of blown highlight detail that Studio simply loses). It also seems to give files completely free of stepping and with much less moire than SHQ.

If I didn't have ACR, I'd live with RSE and it's slightly strange colour output.
