davor_trumbic
I just got Epson 4990 and I am scanning some medium format B/W negatives. With my 35mm Minolta film scanner I was using Vuescan but with Epson I am getting better results with Epson software. Does anyone have experience with both softwares and what should be the workflow of using Vuescan with 6x6 negatives on Epson 4990?
jtk
I'm curious...I know Epson does a good job of software, but I use Vuescan on my 3200 and my Nikon...how's the Epson software "better" for you with the 4990?
davor_trumbic
Well, I try to scan to the same size using the same sharpening in Photoshop and somehow when I open Vuescan scan in Photoshop it looks softer and sometimes has some artifacts that are not present when I look at the picture in Vuescan. I suppose I am doing something not what I should not. That is why I ask if you can give me some of your setting for Vuescan
steven_clark
Are you trying to use the infrared cleaning or something? That's what springs to mind when you say "artifacts". Also the epson driver might be doing some sharpening by default and/or may be improving contrast by clipping.
davor_trumbic
No, I am not using anything, just plain scan. What are your settings in Vuescan for medium format B/W negative?
arif1
I use Vuescan for just about everything on my 4990 - B&W, C41 & E6 and I've always been quite pleased with what I get. Though, there's a bit of post processing in each case. Here are the settings I use: Input > Mode:Transparency Input > Media:Image Input > Quality:Archive (4800dpi) Input > Number of Samples:4 (Sometimes upto 8, depending on how dense the neg is) Input > Exposure Clipping:0.01% Crop > Border:8% Crop > Buffer:12% Filter > Sharpen:Yes Color > Color Balance:Nuetral Color > Brightness:1 Output > JPEG Size Reduction:2 (So its an effective 2400dpi scan) Post Processing: For B&W - I invert, set black levels and desaturate - then I do an AutoContrast/AutoLevels and I'm usually happy with the results. arif1
Next time, I'd do better to check the last post date so I don't go on unnecessarily :)
