Canon 50mm F1.8: Outstanding lens

I recently purchased the Canon 50mm F1.8 lens. I am extremely pleased

with the quality of images this lens provides. I wonder how a $75.00

lens can provide such outstanding sharpness and color?

 

I have a suggestion: Considering it's outstanding cost-to-quality

factor, is it possible to open a seperate image forum that will hold

images made from this lens only? Here people can post their favorite

images made from this lens. It can be a subset of the images already

available here.

The 50mm has a simple construction with few elements, that have been refined over many many years.

 

But I don't really see the point of a Canon 50mm F1.8 forum.

The 50/1.4 is even more remarkable lens, the background blurr is better with the 1.4 than with the 1.8, but for the price I think 1.8 is a value for money. I bought the 1.8 some 8 months back and now it is my primary lens for the eos3.

How about posting some of your pictures for us to see? I'd be interested.I just borrowed a friend's 50 mmf/1.4 and it was very nice.

 

The f/1.8 for $80 is a real bargain and I'd love to see some images.

Keep in mind the 50mm f1.2L lens is just a rumour at the moment. We'll know for sure PMA next February. I was thinking this lens would be released with the replacement 1DsMk3 camera, but that isn't slated till September 2006. But I am hoping the 50mm f1.2L will come out. I just hope its not too expensive.

What was the aperture you shot it at? The DOF appears very shallow.

I've used this lens with my Rebel 2000 and found that sharpness isn't great at apertures from 1.8 to 2.8. Also bokeh leaves a lot to be desired.But,at slightly smaller apertures (from 3.5 or 4), this $75 gem will give you near-L quality.

The EF 50 2.5 CM is the best 50 I've owned, and I have 6 of them.

Is it a challenge focusing manually with the Canon 50mm F1.8 lens - that's what i heard; also, the autofocus is often not so accurate.

That one was shot at 2.2. But this one was at 1.8.

Here is a shot I took with my 50mm F1.8 with NO FLASH. I used my Canon 20d with ISO set to 3200 and shutter at about 1/160. To reduce the noise I simply use PS2 smart blur.<div></div>

I always wondered why there weren't seperate forums on photo.net for different lenses. This

would be a great way for the users to see image samples from lenses they might want to

purchase. We can only hope I guess.

I am a huge fan of lens specific forums! Seeing as the most talked about subject on here is "Lens Selection"! There are some great photos here, I will definetly purchasing a 50 f1.8 in the near future.
