My M2 with a 40 viewfinder.

Actually it looks like a hybrid. M3/MP raised frames around finder windows; M2 style fresnel illuminator window; M2/MP style manual reset frame counter (as far as I can tell from the front view). No self-timer. M3/MP style lens release guard.

 

I might guess it to be an MP converted to an M2 type finder.

It looks cool alright but the 35mm frame in the M2 is perfect for

40mm lenses, so why is it needed? If you are pernickety and want

exact framing you can file the lug on the lens; otherwise the 40mm will bring up the 50mm frame in the VF which is the way I prefer since

it allows plenty of croping room around the image.

Sorry, but in practice I found them to be far from perfect, at least on the M2. They're too wide. I also got the tops and bottoms of my subjects cut off, even at moderate distances

 

I understand that later Leicas (after the M4) have smaller frame lines to compensate for the cameras closer focusing distances so these may be fine,
