sergio_rademacher1
Hello to everybody The other day I was shooting with my 20D and the EF-S 17-85mm . All the sudden a very strong wind started blowing, so I took a couple of more shots and left to the car. Only to realize that the lens got a very thin sand inside, behind the front element and I would say that in some back element as well. It's really bad. My question are: 1. Is this suppose to happen? I know it's not a L class lens, but I don't think this sould happen this easyly. 2. Is this cover by the warranty? I bought the lens about 7 months ago. 3. If not cover, I will be on the bay area for a week (I'm from Chile). Do you guys recommend any particular place to do the lens disassembly and cleaning? Given the short time frame. Thanks in advance, Sergio.-

fourfa
it's normal to get some amount of dust. My backpacking zoom that's been all over the world has noticeable specks throughout, and I never noticed a degradation in the image. yours sounds worse. probably not covered by warranty. Call Keeble and Schuchat in Palo Alto (probably the biggest Bay Area pro shop) - 650.327.8996. They have a repair shop or can recommend someone. m._howard_edwards
I agree with Eric, and it is only a couple of blocks from BART. Downtown parking can be difficult.
mark_chappell
Unless you are certain the dust is affecting image quality (or is big enough to cause mechanical problems), I'd do my best to ignore it. You need a lot of dust in a lens to cause visible optical degradation.
sergio_rademacher1
Man, it's awful. Right after the incident I noticed a LOT of flare when I take pictures with the sun or a strong side light. I'd love to avoid it, but it became an issue. Do you think it will be actually cover under the warranty? I bought it on amazon. Sadly I take pictures with this lens 80% of the time while travelling. I never thought this lens would be so badly sealed. Thanks to everybody! Sergio.-
