will king
I will be traveling to Shenandoah Valley, the souhtern portion. Does anyone have suggestions on certain locations that are especially worthy to photograph? I know the whole area is beautiful, but if anynone can suggest a location with maybe a lake or a stream, I would appreciate it. Thanks. stephen_scardamalia
If you're up for a little hiking there are lots of waterfalls. Round-trip hikes start at about 1.5mi and go up to (I think) about 7 or 8 miles.
stephen_scardamalia
I guess I should clarify that I'm talking about hikes within the Shenandoah Nat'l Park. You can probably find the waterfall info on their website.
wbowman
As others said, it is hard to no be in a beautiful place around the Valley. My favorite is White Oak Canyon trail. http://www.hikingupward.com/SNP/WhiteOak/ [these are not my pics!] I have only gone in the summer and it is certainly spectacular (several waterfalls and towering cliffs). I don't know how it will be in the November/December time frame as I think the leaves will be dropping quickly now.
beauh44
Here are a few shots from a trip I took down the Skyline Drive about two weeks ago... The colors were a bit subtle and I suspect by now that most of the foliage has gone. There was quite a bit of snow in a few spots above 3,000 feet or so. BTW, the same is true regarding peak leaf season (we're past it now) down along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Roanoke.

will king
These are great. I just came back and the trip was worthless. The trees were bare. Some locals told me I missed it by 4-5 days. They had a wind storm that blew all the leaves off. Oh, well. There's always next year. BTW, where's that lake? Its beautiful. beauh44
Thanks William, Actually that's the James River from (I think it's called) The Harry F. Byrd Memorial Bridge. I took a (bad!) picture of the bridge that I shot it from because it's sort of interesting. The Blue Ridge Pkwy is running on top and there's a walkway running directly underneath the parkway. This bridge spans the James and I just took a shot up the river from under the bridge. (Looking to the right of the bridge in the photo below) I obviously made this shot too dark but you'll get the idea. I think I was just south of Buena Vista, Virginia on the B.R. Parkway after driving down the Skyline Drive the day before.

jeff h.
I found a tripod highly useful when I was there about twenty years ago for taking nice, over-lapping, panoramic photos.
