charles_mason
Quick question--is current 75mm Summilux-M now made in Canada or Germany? Thanks for those in the know!
james_.1
Made in Germany now, but shouldn't matter. I mean they all pass the prufzertifikat ja? Or eh?
lawrence_bochkis
I thought Leitz sold their Canadian factory years ago....so there wouldn't be anything Canadian these days?
charles_mason
Thanks, and Lawrence I know all the Noctiluxes were made in Canada and Leica is still selling the older stock. So it is possible to buy new Canadians there.
Bill Blackwell Images
"...so there wouldn't be anything Canadian these days?" Maybe not, but there is! The Noctilux has always been (and still is) made in Canada. The production of the 75mm Summilux moved from Canada to Germany in about 1992. “When you come to a fork in the road, take it ...” – Yogi Berra
lawrence_bochkis
What's the logic of making your flagship lens in somebody else's factory?
al_kaplan1
Who determines "flagship" status? If it's made by the same workers on the same machinery who cares?
richard_ilomaki
Again. ELCAN Optical Technologies, address E.Leitz Blvd, Midland Ontario, Canada is now a division of Raytheon and is a supplier of many different optical systems, including lens elements to Leica. Leica stopped making their own glass years ago, having it all made by contract suppliers. They may still do some grinding and polishing but some lenses are only assembled at home. Ever see the red laser dots in rifle sighting systems in movies? --Specter sighting systems made by ELCAN. http://elcan.phpinternet.com/www/SPECTER_0_0_Index.htm The lenses may be assembled in Solms, but from parts made in different factories by different suppliers. Just about all name brand equipment is made by contract manufcturers, most in Asia. I saw production lines in one plant in Malaysia making disc drives for 3 different computer names, all going into boxes with different Name Brands on them. Ask Big Yellow what cameras or parts are made by Seagull in Shanghai. All that remains of many name brands is the research and marketing, and of course the premium prices.
