frolov
I am the developer of the free color calibration software package Scarse (http://www.scarse.org). As the new release with completely re-worked profile generation algorithm is imminent, I am looking for beta testers to evaluate the real-world quality of the scanner profiles produced. Here is the deal: You post (or send me) a raw scan of IT8.7 or Q60 calibration target in 16 bit/channel TIFF file along with the corresponding IT8.7 calibration data file, and I will make an ICC profile for your scanner. I get the test data, you get the profile and the right to complain if you don't like it :). I am especially interested to hear from people who can evaluate the quality versus commercial calibration systems.
roger_smith4
I am happy to test it compared to Vuescan and LCMS. Tell me what resolution you want the file at (native is 4000dpi, but that's a bit large!) Please tell me where to send the file. jingai at jingai.com
frolov
Preferably, put a native resolution 16 bit/channel scan on the Web or ftp somewhere, and send the URL to frolov@cita.utoronto.ca. If you don't have a web site you can email the files to me directly, but please downsize them to < 5Mb (but keep them 16bit!).
j.baxendell
Several people recommend http://www.yousendit.com for sending big files.
mendel_leisk
John, that's an interesting link, for file transfers. Tried it and works as advertised. Can't see any "catch". What is their motivation to set up such a site? I'm guessing they just rely on advertising revenue?
gilou
of course I'm interrested by your offer ....Did you receive a lot of targets ? On my side, I've tested LCMS, XL Profiler, Vuescan, and other tools. At this time, my 'best profile' has been generated by LCMS. Quick Question: what do you prefer 16bit or 16bit linear ?All calibration tools i've used profile with a lower error when using 16bit. If i send you different targets (Kodak - Fuji - ... ) with different names will you profile them all ? and if yes, will you use the same name in the profile as the one used for the target? Thanks for your initiative. Best regards. Note I've a Minolta 5400 Rev1 and a bunch of IT8 targets.
mike_keran
Andrei, Thanks for the offer, I've emailed you a URL where you can find a 4000DPI, 16-bit scan of a Wolf Faust IT8 target and associated data file. I've used VueScan in the past to profile my scanners and will be happy to compare your profile against that.
dean_erger
I've just started to make custom profiles for my Minolta 5400. (See my post on this forum.) So far, I've "tested" the accuracy of the profiles by looking at the RGB values of the grey scale at the bottom of the Wolf Faust target. I'm not looking for any particular values, but just checked to see if the RGB values for a particular patch are equal. Is my quick test method valid? roger_smith4
Dean, have you looked at the Wolf faust data sheet to see what the values of the "greyscale" are supposed to be? They're not necessarily neutral.
gilou
Hi Andrei, First, thank you for your prompt feedback (profile generation). As mentioned in my mail, I've checked your profile on a bunch of existing scanned photos and the results are really good. In fact your soft seems to generate "colorcast less" profiles.^p On top of that I've tested your profile with what I call the "Profile crash tester".^p In a previous post ( http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00D9gR ), Sean de Merchant has explained a very interesting manner to see very quickly the accuracy of a profile. On top of that I activated the gamut warnings and see what?s going on ?.. The Results with your profile are just amazing. The warning gamut area is very small. In addition, the most interesting part concerns the gradient of colors, which is conserved. I?ve never seen that before on any Icc Profile generated with XLProfiler, LCMS, Vuescan, Minolta built-in or IphotominusIcc. Do you have a windows version of your soft ? I will send you soon the other targets (Agfa, Kodak, Fuji). Another time thank you ?. On the road to the perfect scan.
frolov
The testing is over, and version 0.4 has been released at www.scarse.org (including Windows installer!). Thanks to all who helped with testing!
3d-aeropanoramic project
where do we get a windows-version? its all too complicated to install.
frolov
Here is a direct link to download page. For Windows, get Microsoft Installer (.msi) binary. Command line interface will probably come as a culture shock for Windows users, though :).
