Squeaking from Canon 17-40mm L

Recommended Posts

I just received my order of the Canon 17-40mm L lense. One thing that

doens't seem right to me considering that this is supposed to be a pro

lense, is that the zoom ring squeaks. I thought maybe it would work

its self out but I've been turning it all day and it's still there.

Has anyone else had any noises come from their L lense?

Maybe when they made yours a mouse got in there and well he wants to get out! And as you turn the zoom ring you are hurting its tail (not on purpose of course) and so it squeaks. ;o) lol

By the way mine does not squeak. (Theres no mouse in mine I looked) :o)

Hmm. My first attempt at answering seemed to fail for some reason.

But no, mine does not squeak either. On the opposite, I was immediately impressed about how smooth and silent the zoom and focus rings are on the 17-40L compared to other lenses I've used (all non-L lenses).

Nicholas,

The problem may be that your lens was in a cold climate when it was in the box during transportation. Let it acclimatise to room temperature for a few days and see if the noise goes away. If not, I would definitely go back to the shop. Mine is ok. All you may need is some greese which Canon uses to lubricate these babies. This can be done by an authorized service center. Do not keep on turning: it may damage the lens if it's not well lubricated. G. Luck!
