Sanford
Hey all you jazz fans, is this Steve Miller? The band is the John Handy 40th Anniversary Quintet. Steve Miller was the "Special Guest" but I would like to be 100% sure before I label it.<div></div>
tom5
I'm not much a of a jazz expert .. in fact no expert at all. But, I have a question - Is Steve Miller the son of Glen Miller?
awahlster
Sanford looking at photo's of Steve Miller on the net he appears to have a straight nose not the humped nose in your photo. Also the ear lob is different. If I had to bet $20.00 I would say this is not Steve Miller. And Steve Miller is not really a known for Jazz but for Popular Rock and Roll. And he is not the son of Glenn Miller http://www.stevemillerband.com/bio.html
Sanford
No, he doesn't look at all like the photo.
patrick_jelliffe
Thanks to Mark's link, here's Steve Miller the R&Roller in 2000:
michael s.
I'd sure hate to grab that $20, Mark, but .... <a href=http://www.boston.com/ae/music/articles/2005/08/21/making_the_case_for_steve_miller/>this August 21, 2005 article in the "Boston Globe"</a> mentioned that Steve Miller was going to be playing with John Handy at the then-upcoming 2005 Monterey Jazz Festival.<p><p> Moreover, <a href=http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/entertainment/12599476.htm>this listing</a> from "The Mercury News" mentions the Steve Miller Band as one of the acts.<p><p> Miller, now 61, is and was -- as Mark says -- much better known for his pop/rock playing, but he's a pretty versatile musician. And no, he's not Glenn Miller's son.<p><p> I saw him live once, at an outdoor concert, I believe back in 1971, where I think he was introduced as "Stevie ... Guitar ... Miller !"<p><p> You need my address to send that check, Mark? -:)<p><p> [Having established that he was there, I'd still like to see a current photo, in addition to Sanford's, to verify i.d.]
michael s.
I've looked at Sanford's photo again. That's <a href=http://www.edromanguitars.com/resources/images/stills.jpg>Steve Stills</a>, isn't it ?
michael s.
Mark - We're a push on the $20. Miller *was* there, but Sanford didn't post his picture ... yet. -:)
michael s.
I'm backpedaling. No indication (that I've found) that Stephen Stills was at Monterey 2005. I think I'm back to what I said in my first post, based upon the "Boston Globe" article. Sanford, are you certain this photo was taken during John Handy's set? Sanford
Michael - no, not so sure now, could have been taken during the Spanish Harlem Orchestra set.
Sanford
Now I know why all those digital slr shooters are always talking to the microphones on their cameras.
Sanford
Ok, I now think this is Hector "Maximo" Rodriguez, bass player of the Spanish Harlem Orchestra. Is that a bass?
awahlster
I'm keeping my $20.00 you guys are just a little to confusing for me. time to turn "Book of dreams" on real loud If that don't do it then maybe a little Pink Floyd to smooth the edges
michael s.
Doesn't look like a bass, Sanford. It has 6 strings = guitar.
dfeingold
That doesn't look to me like Steve Miller of "Space Cowboy" fame. Nor Steve Stills (who had very different hair). Whomever he is, the guitar is an electric nylon stringed guitar (note the slotted peghead). It is shaped like a Les Paul with one cutaway. The guitar to his lower right (on stage) is a nylon classical guitar. Also he has music in front of him (probably a chart that suggests a jazz player). Eyes are closed, probably improvsing on "the tune". He is playing in tenth position but not likely aware of it :) So he is likely a fingerstyle jazz player who favors nylon string guitars. arthuryeo
Looks like ... Al Kaplan's brother to me ... :) Hey, Al, you play the guitar, too, right? I remember you doing your self-portrait with the other hand playng the guitar. :^)
monkey
Is it Jerry Hahn?

michael s.
That's good pick, Monkey, but I don't think it's Hahn either. As is the case with Miller, I've only seen photos of Hahn with glasses. And ... I'm not sure Hahn has <a href=http://www.jazzgeek.org/saxy/jerryhahn.jpg>as much hair </a> at this point. -:)

dfeingold
No, I met him a few years back and he doesn't look anything like this man. And I think Jerry plays steel mainly. df
stephen_gilbert1
no that's not steve miller. as far as being a jazz player, although he is known as a rock guitarist his major influence was les paul, a close family friend.
indiana_crabgrass
<a href="http://www.jazzpolice.com/content/view/5402/2/"> Yes </a> > Master saxophonist John Handy was joined on stage by Carlos Reyes on violin and harp (jazz harp! Excellent!), Steve Erquiaga on guitar, Don Thompson on bass, and Terry Clarke on drums. A tender performance of ?Nature Boy? featured a guitarist who also sang. He sounded a lot like Steve Miller of the Steve Miller Band, famous for ?The Joker,? ?Fly Like an Eagle,? and other big ?70s and ?80s rock hits. In fact, it was Steve Miller. Now, who can tell us if if the Terry Clark on drums is the famous trumpet player Terry Clark?
michael s.
Steve Erquiaga on guitar, eh? <p><p> I believe that's <a href=http://www.iar.unicamp.br/musica/guitarra/fotos_louisville/SteveErquiaga.JPG>absolutely correct</a>. [Note: link is an unflattering photo of the guitarist, but the largest readily available jpeg I saw. Many others were tiny pics.]
michael s.
Incidentally, don't you mean the famous trumpet player <a href=http://www.clarkterry.com/>Clark Terry</a> ?
