dark viewinng screen

I have a 2.8C Rollei that I recently got re-interested in due to my

daughter taking a course in b&W photography at the local community

college. Anyway, the focusing screen is much dimmer on the 2.8

xenotar than on my Yashica Mat124G. Is there a way to increase the

brightness of this screen? I've heard that there is a fresnel lens

made for this, but have never seen one at any camera shows I've gone

to.

Thanks Tony DiMeglio

Hi Anthony, welcome back to the world of Rollei photography. Yes, you can replace the 'dark' screens with independent screens. There are several brands you can find in the market. The ones I'm using for my Rollei TLRs are from Beattie. You may be able to locate a dealer near you thru www.intenscreen.com. Happy shooting, Paul.

I recently obtained a 2.8F, and immediately replaced the screen with a Beattie Screen. Although I could not quantify it, it appears to be 2 or 3 stops brighter than the original. It is clear from edge to edge, and quite frankly a dream to use. I had Harry Fleenor install it(Oceanside Camera Repair, Rollei specialist). Nothing but praise for the screen and for Harry. Good luck and Happy shooting!

You might consider getting in touch with Bill Maxwell of Maxwell Precision Optics, PO Box 33146,

Decatur, GA 30033 (404)244 0095. He makes replacement screens or can modify your existing screen so that it is much brighter

and claims to be able to do so for just about any camera; the Rollie TLRs are on the list of cameras that he will modify. You can send your camera to him or he will send you a screen for

installation by your own repairman. I have just sent him one of my cameras (Hasse 500c with the usual dim, flat 500c image). If

you are interested, email me back and I will send you my review when I get the camera back.
