tan_tien_yun
Ello, I'm considering of extending my lens package with a 135 tele elmar, but after reading the reviews on the lens (Yes,it's tack sharp, that's been repeated a 100 and 1 times), I am more concerned about it's OOF rendering (bokeh), as if I do get a 135 , it'll be more for up close (portrait/e.g. body part) shots, where the background has to be pretty much on the OOF side but the subject is tack sharp (like the 50 1.4 summilux). The only reason why I'm would be eye-ing this lens would be it's small compact size. Otherwise, I'll be pretty happy having a hektor or elmarit. I couldn't find any pictures of the tele elmar being used up to its full aperture..perhaps you guys could fill me in?
ronald_moravec1
Pictures of a circus in 1968 Leica Photography. Unfortunutly mine are gone for many years now. Someone shoud have a copy. `68 was the year of intoduction. If nothing shows up, I`ll retrieve my and do some pics. I kkeep the Hector around the house as I do mostly closeup work with 135 and generally not wide open. Make sure your e-mail is correct.
sheridan
Hello Tan, Here's one for you taken with 135mm Tele-Elmar at f4. I think this lens has good OOF rendering wide open.

tan_tien_yun
Hey thanks guys! I think I'm sold on it..looks like even more OOF than the 90 f4 elmar that I'm having. By the way, how easy is to get the original hood for the tele elmar? I noticed alot of them are selling without the original hood.
ben z
I picked up a 135 T-E in "bargain" from KEH for $265 a few months ago (can't figure out why it wasn't rated at least EXC+), and I'm extremely happy with it. I don't think I've ever stopped it down past f/5.6. I'd hardly call it small and compact though. The shade is 12575, they're easy to find but usually run close to a hundred bucks. A generic 39mm-thread shade would work just fine, it isn't very flare-sensitive anyway. BTW it was introduced in 1965, not 1968. Mine's from 1966. paul_neuthaler
Once you put Leitz shade 12575 on anything it becomes a big lens! I had a great 135 Tele-Elmar, second version with smooth focus ring, but sold it to that wise old fox John Brewton. John, give it back!!
john_brewton
So sad, Paul. Please accept this as a token of my condolences on the loss of your 135. Ha, ha. Paul's was mint and I'm happy to report it still is!
peter_n1664876959
Small compact size? I don't think so! To me this lens is huge - for a compact 135mm/f4 you need a Jupiter-11, now that is small, light, and has great optics too. Attached is a shot from the 135 TE that is crap, I know that but it shows OOF both beyond the supposedly in-focus plane and between that plane and the camera. Picture was taken at the recent Chelsea - AC Milan football match here in Boston.

peter_n1664876959
Here's another one that shows a goodish bit of OOF. Taken at f4.

huw_finney
Or, given a big bag and small funds a 135 Elmar, simple lenses have the best OOF.
tan_tien_yun
Well, it's still smaller than the 135 elmarit I had once..so I'm willing to live with that :). Gee...we're talking about US$ here?!
stuart_richardson
This lens was the best 300 bucks I have spent. I just got back from Iceland and Europe and used it to great effectiveness. Here are a few samples that I have scanned so far...

I will say though that it is not tiny. Certainly small compared to an SLR counterpart, but it is long for a leica lens...I think the current apo telyt is smaller and has even better performance. Then again, a beater tele-elmar can be had for 300 or so.
stuart_richardson
Oh, I should mention that the one that I got was a tele-elmar m, e46...the latest before the current.
tan_tien_yun
Damn! That's some color! I just got one off ebay, the second version..now I just need to start hunting for a hood... Looks like this lens would make a great add on!
simonpg
Tan, in EVERY respect the Tele-Elmar 135mm is superb. IMHO, the OOF is very appealing. The lens was so good that when Leica "reinvented" it into the current barrel design, the optics remained unchanged until the APO-Telyt version. Some users argue that the Tele-Elmar (both barrel styles) has the more appealing OOF.
