anesh
Canon EOS350D/RebelXT, 580ex on camera and 2 x 420EX's on stands a few feet on either side of camera and at 45 degrees. I want to use this setup for a few group photos. What can I use as background lighting?
digitmstr
You can use ANY flash/strobe with a DIGITAL slave (i.e. one that doesn't trigger with the pre-flash). You could also use continous light is a strobe is not available. If desired, you'll have to put gels on the ligth to match the color temp of the flashes. nello
Or find another 420. And set it to group "C" which is intended for background lighting.
anesh
"Or find another 420" Using another 420ex for background may not work as the 580ex would need to "see" it.
affen_kot
ambient light sources can be a real help for background lighting (short lamps, low-set wall lighting, etc). using what's already there forces you to learn white balance settings and to possibly carry some gels along, but with creative use of indigenous light, camera angles and subject placement, you can get some great results. try this site for some creative lighting inspiration: www.dg28.com
bill_goldman
You can use studio type strobes connected via cable to the pc connector on your camera. The exposure will be determined by the camera based on the preflashes from the wireless components only.
athinkle
Off topic, but can you get gels to turn tungsten into daylight? I know i've seen it the other way around, and I've seen daylight to fluorescent.

You will need to determine the exposure (f/stop) for the studio strobes using a FLASH meter. The EX exposure will be determined by the E-TTL. But, again the pre-falsh could trigger the studio strobes if they have a built-in slave so, that will need to be turned OFF when using a PC cable. Just wanted to make that clear...
