Scary happening

Recommended Posts

I went out this AM with my Canon 20D loaded with a SanDisk Ultra II,

1GB card. The card was about 75% full. After shooting for a while I

got a "CF Full" message and, not surprisingly, the camera quit

working. I loaded another card and went on. When I got home I was able

to download images from the second card OK. But none of the new images

on the first card could be read, either by my PC or by the camera.

Two new folders of the format "nnnCANON" had been created but seemed

to be empty. The photos from previous day's work were there just fine.

So I put the card back into the camera, and now it says the card is

NOT full and I am able to take pictures and download them normally.

But the photos I took this AM are plain gone (or not retreivable).

What I'd really like to know of course, is whether the card or the

camera is to blame. Any ideas?

Also, is there reliability data available for the various brands of CF

cards? Many thanks.

Yikes! I just bought a new SanDisk Ultra II 1G for my 20D yesterday for an important model shoot next week! This IS scary!!

Was this the first time the card was used? If not, what was it used for, before? Was if formatted before this use? Had you ever filled the card up this far, before?

Peter, it was not the first use, and it was formatted in the camera at the beginning. I have several cards and I can't be sure if this particular one ever filled up before. I'm going to retire it and watch what happens with the others. I will also, when I'm out in the field, periodicaly dial back through several photos to ensure they are being written.
