ggraves
I'm looking for large wooden picture framing (20x30 up to 30x40 inch) from a reasonable priced supplier for my MF enlargements. Anyone have any experiences or recommendations of a supplier? Thanks much.
ilkka
IKEA has quite a good selection of solid wood frames, even in square sizes.
the shuttered eye
Try Light Impressions. I've been pretty happy with their basic black wood frames: http://www.lightimpressionsdirect.com/servlet/OnlineShopping
or
PictureFrames.com for a wider selection of frames: http://www.pictureframes.com
or
a new shop where I got some reasonably priced (cheaper than Light Impressions but perhaps not as fine), custom cut mats. I have not seen their frames, but their prices seem better than Light Impressions: http://framedestination.com/
Light Impressions is probably your high quality source if price is not a consideration. They seem to cater to photographers needs. Try FrameDestination.com if you want to save a few bucks or to see how well they stack up against Light Impressions (their frames may, in fact, be just as good, I don't know). I hope this helps. OCULUS New York
Hi Geroge, I just got a call from my local art store framer who is worried about how my 12x18 glossy print looked after it came out of the mounting press. He says the glossy black surface (night shot of a theater marquee taken with my $12 6x9 Agfa Clack) has dimples and all the glossy black area just doesn't look right. He wanted me to see it before we proceeded. He suggests that I get it reprinted on matte finish paper, as that will go through the heat press much better. This all comes after he talked me out of a 18x24 custom frame, in favor of an inexpensive stock frame and double cut matting (half the $120 price of custom matting and framing) I pass all this along to demonstrate what a local professional can do for you, for a few bucks more, especially if you are dealing with large images. While it's fun to do this yourself, this print is being entered in an important show and charity auction, and I don't want it to reflect badly on my reputation (I'm risking enough blowing up a Clack image!) There are lots of places online that offer cheap modular frames, but I have found them to not be worth my time and effort, especially given the expense of matting (not to mention a decent cutter). Good luck, but don't overlook the local guy who will serve you well. Cheers, Ray Hull
chris_laudermilk
I've used framedestination before. Nice stuff (I've mainly ordered the metal frames) and the owner is a photographer himself. They should be able to help.
