at
I've had my D200 about one week now. Still playing and testing. I do have a couple of questions for the D200 users if you dont mind. 1) I inserted a fully charged battery into my d200 but then left the house to go to the mall. When I returned I found that I left the camera "on". I was more surprised to see the battery indicator blinking and not allowing any shots to be taken. I was only gone 2 hours. Should the battery have exhaused so fast?? (I do have a spare). 2) Above situation: When I picked up the body it was quite warm. The entire grip and underside were warm to the touch. Does yours do this?? I have 3 days left to return it to Ritz if I feel there is a problem and would like your input. Thanks in advance. rjacksonphoto
That doesn't sound good. I haven't left mine on that long but have never noticed a problem when I did leave it on. Sounds like a bad battery. Have you tried the other battery?
at
Trying the other battery now. Its only been a short bit. Does your grip get noticibly warm?
ShunCheung
This does not sound normal at all. There may indeed be a short circuit somewhere. Hopefully it is merely that one battery. If your camera has the same problem with both batteries, I would get it checked out ASAP.
jc5066
Grip should not be getting hot. Contact Nikon ASAP.
paul_sokal___dallas__tx
Even left on it should go into a hibernate mode and not drain the battery. Definitely should not get warm. I agree with the others-you should take it back.
photos by kiem
Would wrong battery selection cause this? Choices from Custom Setting menu: AA Alkaline, AA NiMH, AA Lithium, AA nickel-manganese.
at
Interesting thought but I check battery selection and it is OK. I think the selection is for what battery is in the optional grip. I am very uncomfortable with the amount of heat I felt in the grip. I am returning the camera to Ritz and will wait for the next batch to arrive. But please keep the ideas coming. Thanks to all. dan_brown14
Good for you August, take it back! I have my D200 money ready to spend, but I am waiting (using D100) until there are D200's in stock everywhere and dealers are offering a bit of a price reduction to move them. There is the leading edge, and there is the bleeding edge, you decide.
photo5
I didn't know the D200 could take AA batteries...why would the menu have those choices? Dave
heavy
The MB-D200 battery grip allows use of AA batteries. - henrik
at
I believe the d200 allows you to choose the battery type only when using the optional grip. I think this is so the battery indicator responds properly according to the type of battery used. Different types of batteries have different discharge curves (rates). sean_flanigan
Hm, I haven't had that problem with mine, nor have I heard of anyone else having that problem. The battery life on the d200 is not great to begine with though. Respectfully, Sean Flanigan. http://seanflaniganphotography.com
dave_dube
Turned mine on last night before going to bed after reading this string, got up this morning and it didn't have any hint of warmth, batteries were still fully charged. Top LCD was still partialy on but otherwise in hibernate. I too have the D200 battery grip.
ShunCheung
Is your D200 showing this same problem with both batteries? Potentially, it could be a battery problem too. I would also look into the battery compartment to make sure that there is no short, at least not visible ones.
at
Appears to be both batteries. I will be replacing the unit in the next hour. I certainly hope this was just a fluke. I keep everyone posted. Once again, thank you for the responses. Augie
at
Well, so far with the new body (and its new battery) PLUS my spare battery I have not had any problems what so ever. The body is cool and one battery has lasted approx 3.5 hours with no loss of power. Lets hope this was an isolated case. Thanks for you assistance! ShunCheung
I am glad that you now have a very cool Nikon D200. :-)
judy_0ndrey
August, Has your problem totally been solved? I just purchased the D200 with two batteries and shot about 168 frames on jpg high, and the battery was gone... charged up the other one and same thing...they are not lasting nearly as long as the D100 batteries....could it be something in the camera?
