g._m._houser
I have an old Vivitar 35mm film camera. This camera has a button which I can push and it shows me what the lighting looks like as I change the f stops or speed. The view becomes darker or lighter. I love this function. My question is, does the 10D do this too? I can't seem to find anything like that on the camera. I hate to completely rely on the light meeter. I like to play with lighting and the function my old Vivitar has lets me do that. Thanks in advance for any help......
rustymadd
The button you refer to is called the "depth of field preview" button, or DOF. Yes the Canon 10D has one, it's electronic and located on the left side of the lens mount...if you're holding the camera as if to shoot. It's only affected by the F-stop selection. ryan nutt
Just don't push it with a flash on, it'll freak you out :-P When you attach an exteral flash that button doubles as the modeling light trigger so the flash will fire at 60hz (I think) for 1 second. scott_eaton
Yes, and it's very annoying :-)
dan_vidal
Closer to 10 I think? I hit it once deliberately the day I got my 10D, and had a 550EX attached. Scared the cat.
akajohndoe
I once used it to discourage a racoon up one on my trees on my front walk from taking up residence nearby.
g._m._houser
I'm glad the 10D has other uses besides taking pictures :-) I played with the dof button last night. My old camera you would push the button and it stay on until the shutter release was pressed. I'll just have to get used to holding this button in while playing with the fstops. Thanks for the info..........
digitmstr
>>I hate to completely rely on the light meeter.<< The DOF button and metering have nothing to do with each other. All EOS cameras measure light wide open at the time you take the picture. Even if you use EL, and stop down before taking the reading, changing the aperture does NOT affect the final exposure (unless your camera is in Manual mode). If you want to "correct" the meter reading you should use EC.
