dhiren
When is it a good time to visit Eastern Sierra to capture vibrant spring colors ? Is there any website provides such information ? Thanks Dhiren
richard_cochran
There's rarely a bad time. Spring comes to the different elevations at different times. There has been a LOT of late snow this year, and heavy wet snowstorms are still coming. It looks like this year, the passes may not see spring before July. If you go before things melt too much, you'll be restricted to the lower elevations.
See http://www.395.com/ and http://www.bishopvisitor.com/ for more local info. david_s5
How high up and how far north are you going to be? You'll likely find flowers at the bottom of the foothills right now, and still find snow on the mountaintops above Tahoe during the first week of July.
You can get information about snow conditions here, and California state-wide wildflower reports here. dave wyman
Just remember that the Eastern Sierra is the desert side of the mountains. You're going to have to work a bit to find spring color in terrain that's in a rain shadow.
fourfa
how about the poppy reserve near Lancaster? I read earlier it was going to be a bad year for the poppies...
craig_gillette
Should be getting some more rain in Socal Friday, that may be it for a while. I don't know that anybody is too sure just how flowers will go. We went a longer than usual dry spell but have had a lot (in relative terms) rain more recently. I believe I read the preserve was getting growth of some fast growing plants which may grow up enough that they overwhelm the poppies. Saw some patches, at a daistance in the Lake Elsinore/Temecula area the other day but not in the Lake Rd. area which has been good in the past. This may be a year that you take if and when it comes. The eastern Sierra should, as noted, get flowers as the snow season leaves so latitude and altitude will be the players there.
