Can Nikon FA use modern G lens?

I would like to know if Nikon FA can be used in Shutter Priority or

Program Mode with Modern G lens which doesn't have aperture ring

control. I know it cannot be used in Aperture priority mode, since

camera cannot control the aperture of lens. Anyone who has

definitive knowledge, please respond. Thank you in advance.

Having tried it, I believe the problem is this: the camera believes that the lens is using

stopped down metering--that is, it will meter with the lens entirely open. When the shutter

fires, it will stop it down completely.

Teh FA doesn't support stopped down metering, and requires a lens that is at least AI to work correctly as it gets it's lens info mechanically like teh FG rather than electronically like the AF bodies.

I've tried a G lens on my FA. It's functional only in M mode at minimum aperture.

Hi Mike,

G lenses can be used with the FA but there are many limitations.

Without tricks a G lens can be used in A at maximum apeterure. Eposure time is displayed is wrong but the FA will expose right, the time is the same as manually stopped down. At S you can use minimum aperture of the lens, the FA varies the time if it doesn't match the time on the time wheel.

If you adjust the aperture coupler to f22 or similar, S works correctly with adjusting the apterture with instant stop down mode. P also works. See the images of my FA.

I've made correct exposures with the DX 18-70 G on slide film.
