m.c.fitz
Before the Battle of Waterloo the Duke of Wellington was supposedly asked if he thought the French feared the English troops. His reponse was "The French, Sir? I don't know, but by God I do!" Nice series Trevor.

paul t
Yes, that was Wellington, I believe he was inspecting the troops before Waterloo, and the quote was ""I don't know if these men will frighten the enemy... but by God they frighten me!" m.c.fitz
Thank you Paul, that sounds more accurate. Incidently, at Boulogne sur Mer, there is a statue of Napoleon, elevated on a plinth that is equal in height to Nelson's column at Trafalgar Square, with Buonaparte's back turned resolutely towards the Channel. Worth seeing.
al_kaplan1
John, no, not my brother. I don't have one! But considering his thick luxurious mop of greying hair he probably rolls his own like I do from decent quality tobacco.

jack_lo_..._t_o
Beautiful pictures as usual Trevor. But lacking any explanation of these bizarre rituals you are showing us, I'm left with the inescapable conclusion that Englishmen are totally wacky. Fear is definitely a possibility. john_wire
Al, I'll bet most of the forum people who have seen your profile could "point you out" in a crowd based on your hair rather than the Leica you carry sometimes. Some of us, myself included, could use a lot more. Smile. Peace. Great Pics Trevor, which Leica/lens were you using?
m.c.fitz
Jack, I don't know what the explanation for this event is either, but if you check out this web site: http://www.napoleonguide.com/reenact_8thligne.htm it might not seem so strange. Historical and military re-enactment is big (especially in N. America in fact). Considering that there are re-enactors playing out Waterloo and the Napoleonic era, English field gun practice just doesn't seem so out of place. They might know something we don't! Cheers, m.c.fitz p.s. yes Trevor, what was this all about?
