steve_levine
This is a digital image taken with a Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 1:2.8/6- 72MM ASPH lens, on a Panasonic digital. This is at the long end of the zoom, which equals a 420MM lens in 35MM. Does this lens exhibit any Leica like characteristics? I was just wondering. The camera (DMC FZ10)has vibration control soft ware, and does a remarkable job.<div></div>

andrew_hall1
Even good bokeh can't save a busy background. I highly recommnend Douglas Herr's works.

edmo
yeah man it's got leica written all over it, great bokeh, the glow, elegantly and poetically rendered technical details and a crap pic...congrats, ya nailed it.
steve_levine
All I was asking is: is this good bokeh or bad? I have no idea what freaking bokeh even is. I was just wondering if this is considered acceptable or not? And if the Leica lens is doing anything to contribute to this? I realize this is a bad photograph, it is only an example of an out of focus background. Save the sarcasm for your wives, please.

jeremy_tok
Sure it has good bokeh. It's a Leica. When your eyes start fooling you, take a deep breath and say...this is a Leica. Have faith.

johndc
"All I was asking is: is this good bokeh or bad? I have no idea what freaking bokeh even is." At least you're honest. I would have to say it's average bokeh.

michael s.
Well, Ed, on one memorable occasion I did just what you said to do, but it appears not to have influenced my bokeh ... for better or worse -:)<div></div>

edmo
John see? Look at the difference between your shots and Michaels (nice butt shot b.t.w.)...worlds apart, worlds apart....I know it's Leica glass and all but ya still gotta use your head a little and get in nice and tight, keep trying.... vivek iyer
Steve, If you want "good bokeh", try your 75-150mm f/3.5 E-series zoom wide open at about 5 meters (any focal length) or the 50-135mm f/3.5 zoom (wide open again) for head shots of people. steve_levine
In the above "lilly" shot, I'm failing to see anything even vaguely disturbing to my eye in the out of focus highlights? So I ventured to guess this was acceptable bokeh? I have seen that sort of harsh, blade like effect that sometimes haunts backgrounds. But I'm not seeing it here? j_johnson
OK, enough zooming in. The mule is looking mean now; but stay away from the horse - not nice when nervous ...--WMW--... = pooh
mr.wind-upbird
Besides being a bad photo, does this count as "bad bokeh"? It was shot through a Jupiter-8 with a Bessa R on Reala.<div></div>
jbq
Noboru: yeah, bad bokeh. If you look at an individual OOF highlight, you can see that the light concentrates more on the edge of the highlight rather than being uniform or in the center - and that's what creates the harsh background. doug herr
Steve, IMHO your photo shows that the lens has good bokeh under these conditions (distance, focal lenght, aperture). It's not nessesarily a "Leica" attribute but it sure has the potential for giving you pleasing photos.
