sam_portera
I have the Nikon 28-105 3.5-4.5 but on a recent event I found balancing ambient light and flash difficult because of its 4.5 max aperature at the longer focal lengths. I had to use my 50mm F1.8 and 85 F1.8 at 2.8 to get the light correct. I do not like having to switch lenses while covering an event. I am considering selling it to buy a faster zoom, namely the Tamron or tokina. Anyone use these lenses or can suggest an alternative. Wich is better? I obviously cannot justify the Nikon 28-70mm F2.8 and the the 35-70 F2.8 isn't wide enough for me.
douglas_fleming
Sam, I have the Tokina 28-70 2.8 and it is very sharp...and a whole lot less than the Nikon lens.
dennismk
I also have the Tokina 2.8 ATX Pro and have found it to be very sharp and a well built lens.
steve_muntz
I have that Tokina and it's noticably sharper than the Nikon 28-105. A friend has the Tamron and he's pretty happy with that one as well. It's a lot smaller and lighter which is why he sold me the Tokina. However, it has an odd (for Nikon system, anyway) filter diameter - think it's 67mm, but the Tokina 28-80 is 77mm.
mendonphoto
The Tamron is easily the best bargain for a lens that I have ever seen.

If you're interested, check out my review here. sam_portera
Very interesting review Aaron. I'm leaning towards the Tokina 28-80,I like its build quality, more comparable to my 80-200 F2.8 Nikkor.
jim r
I had a Tokina 28-80 in Canon mount and recently purchased the Tamron 28-75. Based on only a few rolls through the Tamron, it appears these lenses have similar optical performance, a slight edge to the Tamron. The Tokina has a better build quality and the Tamron has a closer minimum focus distance, and is much lighter.
bernard_frank
I am very happy with the Tamron 28-75/2.8. Sharp and with a nice rendition of colors.
