I used to have a black cat, Hal(oween), and he was difficult to photograph. With only direct flash, I might as well have been photographing a one-demensional piece of black matte board.

 

 

The best you can do is use multiple light sources- front, sides and back. Its still like lighting a black hole, but at least you get some demensionality and texture to the pet.

I have tens of thousands of black lab shots. Once you learn to adjust your exposure, it's not too bad. I even called my business Black Dog Photography :)
