alfarabi
Hi all I have this problem. I bought a used Tamron SP 90mm Macro AF (non Di) lens for use on my old Nikon F601. It worked fine. However, when I made the switch to the D70s and try to use this lens, I keep getting an error message and I cannot shoot. But when I placed a TC (N-AFd 2x Teleplus MC7) between the camera and this particular lens it works fine. Any explanation anyone?
eskoufos
I have used the Tamron SP Macro 90mm f2.5 in my D70 with no problem. I suspect that it is compatible with the D70s also. One think that comes in mind is to make sure that A is set at the highest setting on the lens when mounted on the camera, otherwise it will not autofocus nor it will release the shutter. Good luck! alfarabi
Sorry I tried that but it didn't work. The lens cannot be mounted if it is not at set at F32 anyway :(
ro_ro
What error message do you get?
fourfa
I have the exact same lens and it works fine on my D70. perhaps it's missing the aperture indexing tab?
alfarabi
Thanks for the response all. I get the "FEE" message and "r09". The shutter locks up and I am unable to shoot. I am not sure about the aperture indexing tab. What is it? Is that the little "thing" sticking out of the lens mount? :) Thelens still works fine with the TC. alfarabi
I've checked in other forums and asked around too and I've been told to clean the metallic contacts at the base of the lens and the camera's lens mount. I have tried these but they don't work. Very strange cos it works wonderfully with the TC (which gives me more reach for the macro stuff that I do). But sometimes I would like to work without the TC and it just refuses to :( BTW, it works well with my 25 mm Uniplus extension tube too. The AF works and I can shoot. Just like with the TC. Strange. ro_ro
FEE mean that the EE-switch is not closed. Normally it is closed when the maximum aperture is (e.g. 32 or 22) chosen. Kenko tubes and TCs have a small tap that closes the EE-switch even when no lens is mounted. You may have the maximum aperture not completey chosen and locked or the little tab on the lens is damaged. Can you post a picture from the Tamron's lens mount? fourfa
There should be a tab on the lens mount that locks open the aperture switch on the body. I bought a used lens once where the tab had been broken off (not all bodies use this tab, so it can slip through a vendor's functionality test). Here's a picture of the tab on your exact Tamron 90mm 2.8 (non-Di):

(don't mind the lens flare from shooting the flash directly into the lens, oops!) fourfa
also, the temporary solution if the tab has broken off (until you get the aperture ring replaced): jam a short piece of matchstick into the switch on the body to hold it open. The caveat is that now if you move the aperture ring away from the smallest setting, your exposure will be off.
alfarabi
Yes, yes. You have solved the msytery. Yes the tab is broken off. My lens is a used one and I missed that. Just a further question. Why did it work with Nikon F601? Thank you very much again. Really appreciate it. :)
ro_ro
It works with a 601 because the 601 has an aperture coupler and no EE switch. Only AF Nikons that don't meter with an manual lens need the tab.
