5D Firmware update

My 5D is one of those early ones where the fifth digit of the serial number is

a 1. After reading the info on

http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/eos5d/eos5d_firmware-e.html

I see that my version of 5D needs to go back to Canon to rectify a problem

with "EOS 5D + EF85mm F1.2L + Speedlite580EX." This issue doesn't really

worry me and have left it till now to update.

My issue is that I do use an ST-E2 in conjunction with a 580EX flash, and the

latest firmware update fixes a problem where it stops the system going to

manual mode and keeps it in ETTL mode.

My question is, do I need to send the camera to Canon to fix the earlier

problem before I update this latest version, or if I just install the latest

firmware will it fix the ST-E2/580EX problem?

I guess I could just install it and see what happens but this is the first

time I've posted a question, and at least it isn't a "what lens should I get"

question.

Cheers,

Actually that is merely a display error. It works perfectly in E-TTL II although M is displayed

on the Speedlite LCD. I installed 1.10 several weeks ago and, oddly, although Canon claims

they fixed it, the display error with 5D, ST-E2 and 430EX/580EX is still present. That is, it still

displays M once the ST-E2 pulses. No biggie as flash exposure is fine and E-TTL is displayed

on the ST-E2 (just not on my 430EX). No display error with any of my other bodies...

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.

Thanks for that answer. Is your 5D also one where the 5th digit of the serial number is a 1?

If the problem is just a display one then that's OK. I was hoping that the bug may have explained some bad flash shots. Must be me then, not the flash.

I've been using my 5D/ST-E2 and Speedlites for 4 months and flash exposure has been

extremely consistent (mostly product shots). I didn't notice the display problem until I read

about it on another forum. I set the flash and camera and never look again unless there's a

problem. It always dispalys E-TTL initially and doesn't show M until later when the ST-E2

pulses.

After installing the FW 1.10 I didn't notice any difference with any aspect of the camera.

That's good as it appeared to work fine. Unfortunately the function of the Direct Print button

hasn't changed...
