frederick_muller
Took a boat out to the island of Murano outside Venice. Paid a visit to a glass-blowing factory. I'd done this before, in Venice proper, back in 2000. However, I understand that since then, the glass blowing factories in Venice proper have been moved out to reduce the risk of fires.<div></div>

Philip Freedman
Have you read Donna Leon's latest detective novel? Commisario Brunetti investigates a death in a glass factory on Murano. Your photographs have helped envisage the scene. Philip
frederick_muller
I haven't, actually, but I'll put it on my list. I am currently reading "Lucifer's Shadow" by David Hewson, also set in Venice. A lot of Hewson's stories are set in Italy ... his earlier works were set in Rome, and bring the city alive. I'll see how well Lucifer's Shadow does the same for Venice. frederick_muller
It was hot, and there's a particular greasy, gritty, carbony smell to the air. It's a lot more like a garage, or furnace room ... not at all what you would associate with the final output, which are delicate glass pieces. Next door, you have the show-room, air-conditioned, with all the lovely finished pieces.
